NAKONDE District has rolled out the injectable medicine for preventing the acquisition of HIV. The medicine is known as Cabotegravir Long-acting Injectable (CAB-LA.
Speaking at the thunderous launch, which took place yesterday at Nakonde Urban Clinic, Her Royal Highness, Chief Waitwika urged her subjects in the district to take advantage of the innovative medicine and protect themselves from the HIV virus.
The traditional leader, who spoke passionately about the need for more innovative HIV prevention strategies, said (through her interpreter) “I wish the medicine was introduced in the district earlier.”
The CAB-LA rollout is supported by the USAID Controlling HIV Epidemic for Key and Underserved Populations (USAID CHEKUP II) Activity and its partners.
The launch was attended by various stakeholders, including the Nakonde Town Council Chairperson, Nakonde District Commissioner, with representation from the USAID Zambia Muchinga Province Health Office, church representatives, and other USAID Zambia implementing partners.
CAB-LA is now available at Nakonde Urban Clinic and USAID CHEKUP II-supported wellness centers within the district.
The USAID CHEKUP II Activity is a 5-year activity and is implemented by John Snow Health Zambia Limited.
