Connected by Data—Ensuring Uninterrupted Care for People Living with HIV

Buchi Main Urban Health Centre in Kitwe is part of a network of health facilities that have embraced digital transformation through the electronic Logistics Management Information System (eLMIS). This digital platform has redefined how health facilities manage stock, collaborate on resource sharing, and ensure continuity of care – especially for people receiving Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) testing services.

Data Visibility Improves Stock Management

Laboratory Technologist Gift Tembo shared how he ensures that the laboratory at Buchi Main is well stocked and operational. To manage stock levels, he relies on data from eLMIS Central Edition (CE) as well as information shared by the facility’s logistics officer, who uses eLMIS Facility Edition (FE). This system enables him to track stock levels and consumption rates, allowing for proactive planning to meet the center’s needs.

“The data from eLMIS is incredibly helpful for preparing reports, making stock orders, and coordinating with partners during outreach programs,” said Gift. “It gives us a clear picture of what we have and what we need to order.” This transparency allows the facility to operate efficiently, ensuring they are prepared for community outreach programs and other activities that require careful stock management.

Stock Sharing, Collaboration, and Data-Driven Decisions to Ensure Uninterrupted Care

A key benefit of eLMIS is its capacity to facilitate stock sharing between facilities. Through the platform, health centers can see what resources are available across the network, enabling them to share or request supplies in times of need.

“We’re able to share supplies like HIV testing kits with other facilities, and they do the same for us when needed,” Gift explained. “The eLMIS platform shows us where stock is available, making it easy to identify which facilities can help.”

This data-driven collaboration is particularly important for ensuring continuous care, especially for people living with HIV. Coordinated stock sharing allows health centers to improve operations and avoid critical shortages, ensuring that patients receive the services they need without disruption.

“The system has brought us together,” Gift shared. “Whether it’s verifying stock, planning for community outreach, or making critical supply orders, we’re all on the same page because of the data eLMIS provides.”

This real-time collaboration ensures that no facility is working in isolation—each centre is part of a larger network focused on meeting patient needs through teamwork and data sharing.

Supporting HIV Testing Services

In the fight against HIV, having timely access to testing kits and related supplies is essential. eLMIS not only helps manage stock but also ensures that patient data, such as test results and medical history, are accurately recorded and easily accessible.

“The connectivity provided by eLMIS allows us to prevent disruptions in care for people living with HIV,” Gift noted. “With real-time stock data, we can plan in advance, make orders, or coordinate with other facilities to meet demand.”

This system has become an invaluable tool in ensuring that testing services run smoothly and that patients receive timely follow-up and care.

Impact on Patient Care

The positive impact of eLMIS on patient care is clear. By providing real-time stock and consumption data, the platform helps prevent stockouts, reduces waste, and ensures that essential medical supplies are always available.

For health workers like Gift, eLMIS has made it easier to deliver uninterrupted, high-quality care. The system not only streamlines logistics but also strengthens the broader health network by ensuring that no patient goes without the essential services they require.

Connected by data, empowered by technology, and driven by collaboration, health facilities across Zambia are working together to ensure the continuity of care for people living with HIV—ensuring that no one is left behind.
